Weekend Bathroom Reno – Quick Fixes for the Bathroom of Your Dreams
Instead of spending a gloomy weekend day dreaming about the could-haves or would-haves in your home, tackle these six easy DIY bathroom makeover must do‘s and fashion your bathroom to be truly dream worthy. These easy tips and tricks will transform your bathroom in just two days leaving you time to kick up your feet come Sunday evening.
BE INSPIRED BY PAINT
Start with ridding the walls of the hideous pinks or pale blues of the past and choose a milder hue – bright whites, sandy tans, or muted grays. Going neutral will help create a blank canvas to spark your bathroom inspiration and aid in picking décor, accenting vanities, and floor and cabinet color schemes.
The lighter the walls, the brighter the bathroom. As most bathrooms are windowless or have small windows, the lighter color will radiate what light the bathroom does have and create the illusion of more square footage and a more luminous space.
If you love color and dream of a spa inspired room, pale green and pine accenting woodwork pair for a great combination.
Or, try painting the walls in ‘hotel’ fashion with inspired stripes in cream and tan. The alternating colors will add interest and dimension to a room without overwhelming the area.
MIRROR, SINK AND VANITY CHANGES
While the biggest and most daunting part of the weekend reno will likely be the vanity, sink and mirror make-over, this step of the reno will be the most style defining. After years of daily wear, the vanity and sink are part of the bathroom that often looks the most run down and truly ready for a transformation. Fortunately, changing these out are easy enough that any DIY’er can do it.
Some tricks to keep in mind:
If your bathroom has two sinks, replace the gigantic run of the mill mirror you may currently have with two identical, smaller mirrors for a more open and symmetric appearance. If you have just one sink, replace the mirror with a more substantial one with intriguing features or a heavy frame.
Vanities can easily be transformed by a quick coat of paint. Remove the drawers and hinges, sand the wood then prime and paint away in the color of your choosing. Replace the old knobs with new for a more dramatic change. For ultimate vanity facelifts, replace the sink and vanity completely. For smaller rooms, we highly recommend wall mounted faucets and vessel sinks or a pedestal sink to reveal more visible floor space which will create the illusion of a bigger bathroom.
WAINSCOTING OR TILE UPGRADES
Instantly update a powder room or bathroom with a new sink back splash or tile border. Taking on a tile task is something we know you can handle, but if you feel you need some guidance, Smart Tiles or Backsplash panels are easy to apply alternatives.
Or, create the illusion of dimension in a small bathroom with the addition of wainscoting. To keep costs down, try beadboard wallpaper or board and batten options.
BATHROOM SHELVING
Rid the room of over the toilet case goods and create more walking space under foot by way of floating or hanging shelves for all the necessities. Sturdy clear glass shelves pair with serene, spa inspired rooms while ones in wood finishes warm up rooms with neutral color tones.
Here, we also want to include the importance of clear containers for all the toiletries and baskets for linens. Organization within the bathroom will only help in your renovation and upkeep of your new bathroom in the long run.
LINENS
The easiest part of the weekend reno is in replacing the old linens with new. Shop for bright white towels for a more spa inspired, calming and welcoming bathroom. If needing a shower curtain, pick a white, non-obtrusive one to keep your room mature and minimalistic. When combined, your new linens will immediately make your time spent more soothing.
UPDATED LIGHTING FIXTURES
Replace the outdated light fixtures for new, modern inspired styles to instantly refresh your space. Install unique overhead lights for entire room illumination or simply replace the vanity lights with task lighting options to match your new vanity or bathroom design. In many of our own home designs, we’ve used wall sconces on either side of the mirror if the space was limited. Either way, new lighting will update a bathroom in an easy to install manner.
Accomplishing just a few of the steps listed above is a great way to start your own bathroom fixer-upper. If you need more guidance, give us a call.
