The Top Design Trends of 2020 That Are Not Going Away
With the year coming to a close in the next few months and the new year beginning, we’ve been keeping our head up and eyes on the look out for the new trends expected to grace us in 2021. With every passing year, we usually see trends that change or fads that hit the road but this year, it seems to be different. Aside from 2020 leaving us with lasting impressions (even the not so great ones), it seems the interior designs trends of the year are not going away. In fact, we will see them even in more fruition as all the home projects topping the charts in 2020 roll out as finished ones in 2021.
Here, we’ve listed all the interior design trends in 2020 we are confident aren’t going anywhere. Maybe even you have incorporated some of these into your home already.
Detailed Wallpaper
As the DIY’s and the stay-at-homers took to remodeling more so on their own in 2020, it was wallpaper and accenting wall designs that spiked. Although around for generations, wallpaper now is NOT what it was when you grandma was young. Now, the designs appeal to the mass market and come in varying shapes, sizes, designs, and color tones that there really is something for everyone within the trend. What makes it lasting though is its accessibility and ease to use. What used to be a hard thing to purchase and install; today, wall coverings are one click away on every home décor e-commerce shop or from quality brands like those what we carry in our showroom and are a quick day at home install that the trend is popping up more and more around the globe. Because of this, the trend isn’t going anywhere any time soon. We will see more and more of it throughout the upcoming years and see more professionally designed spaces using this classic design element.
Home Offices/Multi Use Rooms
If 2020 taught us anything, it is that the home is where the work is. With corporations across the globe taking to employees working from home on the permanent, it is a given this trend will stay for the next few years ahead. Plan to see more home office renovations and multi-use rooms where guest rooms turn into computer spaces as we move forward. Gone will be the day where homes house single laptops and separated sleeping spaces. As with this year, sales in the office furniture realm will continue to increase steadily as will the desire for rooms to be designed where one can accomplish many things from hosting meetings to resting to computer time to homeschool/studying time at an oversized desk.
Mixed Mediums
On the rise in the last few years was the homeowners use of varying mediums and metals in any given room. For example, wood and black iron furniture, gold faucets and bronze cabinet pulls, rattan case furniture and linen fabric. For most homeowners, this was an easy trend to adopt as if in an older home, there may already have been mixed metals to work with from years of redesign. But now; more than ever, we are seeing the trend even in furniture and lighting manufactures. It is making it easier for a homeowner to renovate or redesign because this trend allows for them to do so slowly or over time, without having to change things up all at once. And as the DIY lifestyle continues to rise – it is only natural this design trend holds its ground for that very reason.
Natural Accents
With everyone’s homebound approach this year, it was only natural that in 2020 we saw an increase in bringing natural elements to the insides of a home. More people took in live plants to cater too, more clients purchased faux trees to fill a corner, and more folks choose to accent with natural color tones like greens, browns and tans in order to bring an essence of the outside in. And with this design approach also comes the healthier living lifestyle. It is commonly known that the increase of greenery in a home not only reduces stress but also increases productively and creativity as well as lowers blood pressure rates. So, while we dealt with all the other stressors of 2020, it was our homes that became our sanctuary. And because of this, natural outside elements in a home will only become more common in the years to come. It is a trend not leaving us any time soon.
While there are some trends us designers cannot get on board with or some we are very thankful to see go, it is these four this year that we are happy are staying. Each one of these design traits bring so much character and charisma to a room that we cannot imagine that even in the next five years they will be things of the past. And we are certain that in 2021, we will look back on 2020 and realize that there are even more styles from this year that keep on keeping on.
